Fashion in 1960s


The 1960s was the decade that broke many fashion traditations, mirroring social movement during the period. People were dressing in psyhedelic prints, highlighter colours, mismatched patterns, blues, greens and shimmery luderlortand were a variety of lengths and styles. In the middle of the decade, culottes, box-shaped PVC dresses and go-go boots were in. In 1963, the popular bikini came in fashion after being featured in the musical Beach Party. The Beatles exerted a major influence on young men’s fashions and hairstyles in the 1960’s. Jackie Kennedy produced the French manicure with false eyelashes and the pillbox hat, which became extremely popular throughtout the 1960’s. The fashion revolution that brought about these developments started in the streets of London, with talented designers like Mary Quant and Barabara Hukanicki. Actors like Micheal Caine and Jean-Paul Belmondo exerted a srong sartorical influence. Leather-look plastic was popular and was used for a wide varierty of accessories for women,including shoes, knee-high boots, shoulder bags, wrist-length gloves and ‘butcher’s boy’ peacked caps. The hippie movement late in the decade also exerted a strong influence in ladies’ clothing styles, including bell-bottom jeans, tie-dye, and batik fabrics, as well as paisley prints. Mary Quant invented the mini-skirt.
